Sustainability commitment

As you may know, the Lycée Français d’Oslo is committed to an eco-responsible approach.

In 2024, the eco-delegates from the three French schools in Scandinavia worked together on a shared charter for sustainable development, signed by their representatives and ratified by our school council.

It is now up to us to put this charter into practice. The first article of the declaration calls for a commitment to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

The school already provides supplies bearing labels such as “EU Ecolabel” and “Swan Ecolabel”, and every day, whenever possible, waste is sorted or recycled. To continue along this path, we need your support! Teachers have committed to reusing notebooks and school supplies from this year for the upcoming school year. We therefore encourage students not to throw away partially used notebooks, but to use them again next year. As a result, fewer new notebooks will be distributed at the start of the year.

Thank you for your commitment.

In order to reduce stationery waste, we have made sure that supplies which cannot be found in Norway are ordered by the school and distributed to students from 6ème to 3ème at the start of the 2025 school year. For all other materials, teachers will share their supply lists at the beginning of the year.

To limit waste of stationery, we have ensured that materials that cannot be found in Norway will be ordered by the school and given to students from 6èmes to 3ème at the start of the 2024 school year. Otherwise, at the start of the school year, each teacher will provide a list of the materials he or she needs.

Year 11 (Première) Reading List and Summer Reading Guidelines

During Year 11 (Première), students study four literary areas, one of which will be assessed in the French Baccalauréat:

  • The Novel

  • Poetry

  • Literature of Ideas

  • Theatre

Within each literary area, students study one set text (œuvre intégrale) in its entirety. This text forms the basis of one of the essay questions in the written examination. It is therefore important to be thoroughly familiar with a substantial part of these works before the beginning of the school year, as this will save valuable time.

Each set text is accompanied by supplementary reading linked to a specific thematic pathway (parcours). These additional works provide further material and perspectives that may be used in the written essay.

In addition, students will choose one of these supplementary works to present during the second part of the oral examination. You may already begin thinking about which work you would like to present.

Study Area: The Novel and Narrative from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century

Set text: The Knight of the Cart (Le Chevalier de la Charrette) — Chrétien de Troyes

Thematic pathway: The Novel and the Invention of Love

Supplementary reading:

  • Froth on the Daydream (L’Écume des jours) — Boris Vian

  • Madame Bovary — Gustave Flaubert

Study Area: Poetry from the 19th to the 21st Century

Set text: The Douai Notebooks (Les Cahiers de Douai) — Arthur Rimbaud

Thematic pathway: Creative Emancipation

Supplementary reading:

  • The Flowers of Evil (Les Fleurs du Mal) — Charles Baudelaire

  • Alcools — Guillaume Apollinaire

Study Area: Theatre from the 17th to the 21st Century

Set text: No Trifling with Love (On ne badine pas avec l’amour) — Alfred de Musset

Thematic pathway: The Games of Love and Language

Supplementary reading:

  • The Game of Love and Chance (Le Jeu de l’amour et du hasard) — Marivaux

Study Area: Literature of Ideas from the 16th to the 18th Century

Set text: Discourse on Voluntary Servitude (Discours de la servitude volontaire) — Étienne de La Boétie

Thematic pathway: Defending and Preserving Freedom

Supplementary reading:

  • Iphigénie — Jean Racine

  • Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) — George Orwell

  • Rhinoceros (Rhinocéros) — Eugène Ionesco

Summer Reading

During the summer holidays, you are strongly encouraged to read at least three of the books that were distributed before the holidays. As you read, take notes in a reading journal (carnet de lecture), as these will help you answer questions and complete assessments at the start of the school year.

To become more familiar with Arthur Rimbaud, you may also listen to the podcast series “Un été avec Rimbaud” featuring Sylvain Tesson, or read Un été avec Arthur Rimbaud by Sylvain Tesson (Éditions des Équateurs).

For La Boétie, you may likewise listen to or read “Un été avec Montaigne” by Sylvain Tesson.

It is also important to review your literary history lessons. You should be familiar with the major literary movements from the Middle Ages (the period of the novel you will study) through to the 20th century, as well as their principal authors.

Please note: The set texts studied in class have been ordered and will be distributed at the beginning of the school year. The books you have received for the summer are on loan from the lycée.

Happy reading!
