Languages at the French school

The LFO, in addition to offering learning in 4 languages, offers its students the opportunity to regularly participate in various challenges and competitions in Norway such as the International Language Competition or the Spansk festival in Spanish. In addition to these proposals, we also allow our students to pass the Cambridge Certification and the DELE (Certification Diploma in Spanish), the LFO being the reference establishment in Norway since 2021.

In the editorial of the brochure on the language course[1] within the AEFE network, Olivier Brochet, the Director of the Agency, writes:

“The reinforced learning of modern languages from primary school and the promotion of multilingual education are at the heart of the French education project abroad. »

It thus introduces the language policy of the AEFE, which is part of the government action plan ‘French language and multilingualism’ presented by the President of the Republic on March 20, 2018.

Since its creation in 1990 [1], the AEFE promotes the teaching of French and in French in perfect complementarity with the learning of other living languages in order to train multilingual students open to cultural diversity.

The AEFE, placed under the joint supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Cooperation, must ensure the management of the entire school network abroad.

Indeed, while French educational establishments abroad are sometimes very old (since 1689 at Berlin, 1817 at New York, 1915 at Londres), their statutes, like those of their staff, were very heterogeneous.

The AEFE therefore stems from a desire for harmonization.

Indeed, while French educational establishments abroad are sometimes very old (since 1689 at Berlin, 1817 at New York, 1915 at Londres), their statutes, like those of their staff, were very heterogeneous.

The AEFE therefore stems from a desire for harmonization.

The pedagogy implemented at the LFO, as in all AEFE establishments, aims to reinforce the mastery of at least three languages in addition to French.

This teaching aims to best prepare students for their higher education, their professional projects and their future as citizens in an open world by giving them access to a real international openness.

This pedagogical approach makes the most of the integration of establishments into their environment. Thus, as O. Brochet points out:

“The language of the host country, French and the other languages studied and practiced harmoniously nourish and enrich the ‘language biography’ of the students in their daily cultural experience. »

The language policy of the Lycée Français d’Oslo aims to be in perfect harmony with the orientations of the AEFE.

At primary level, three languages are taught:
  • French as a language of learning and as a vernacular
  • Norwegian as host language (from kindergarten)
  • English as a foreign language.
In secondary :
  • Students choose between Spanish or German, from 5ème
  • They are thus able to present an LVA, an LVB and an LVC (optional) at the baccalaureate.
  • High school students can also choose, in the final cycle, the LLCER specialty in addition to the teaching of this language in the common core.

Finally, if they wish, the pupils are preparedaux certifications d’espagnol (CIELE et DELE) et d’anglais (Cambridge B2 et C1) ,allowing them to validate levels higher than the levels targeted for the baccalaureate.

This language teaching at the LFO nurtures the values of the French education system and greatly contributes to forming the citizens of the world of tomorrow.
