Elementary School

The elementary school welcomes pupils from 6 to 11 years old on two cycles (cycle 2 and beginning of cycle 3) and five levels of classes:
  • the preparatory course
  • 1st year elementary course
  • 2nd year elementary course
  • the 1st year average course
  • and the 2nd year average course.
It constitutes the beginning of compulsory education.

The objectives of training in elementary school

The training provided in elementary schools ensures the acquisition of the fundamental instruments of knowledge: oral and written expression, reading, calculation and problem solving.

Furthermore,

  • it fosters the development of intelligence, artistic sensibility, manual, physical and sporting skills;
  • it dispenses the elements of a historical, geographical, scientific and technical culture;
  • it provides education in the visual arts and musical arts;
  • it ensures the teaching of a living foreign language and may include an introduction to linguistic diversity;
  • it also contributes to the understanding and autonomous and responsible use of media, especially digital media;
  • it ensures the acquisition and understanding of the requirement of respect for the person, their origins and their differences;
  • it also transmits the requirement of respect for the rights of the child and equality between women and men.

Together with the family, it provides moral and civic education which includes, to enable the exercise of citizenship, learning the values ​​and symbols of the Republic and the European Union, in particular the national anthem and its story.

The number and duration of cycles throughout compulsory education have been redefined. Since the start of the 2014 school year, nursery school has been a cycle in its own right. The creation of a cycle associating the last two classes of elementary school and the sixth grade should promote better pedagogical continuity between school and college.
