Application process

Accredited by both the French and Norwegian governments, the French School in Oslo warmly welcomes 673 students from Preschool through to High School.

Aged from 3 to 18 years old and of 37 different nationalities, the members of the school community develop in harmony together, learn diversity and are able to speak at least 4 languages. The ability to learn several languages and understand a broad range of cultures is at the heart of our educational approach.

Preschool

Children of all language backgrounds are welcome in our school. It is not necessary to speak French or to live in Oslo to attend the Preschool.

Children who do not speak French when they join our school typically learn it within a few months. 

1st March is the deadline to register your child at our Preschool. This date is fixed by the “Oslo Kommune”. However, children can start at the school all year round. If your arrival in Norway does not correspond with our school calendar, please contact us with any questions you may have and we will guide you through the admission process outside the school calendar

Admission standards in preschool
  • Eligible children must turn 3 during the year and are eligible either :
    • From the date of their 3rd birthday; 
    • From the start of the school year in August for children who will turn 3 between August and December of the same year.
    • The child must no longer be wearing diapers.School Fees

NB : The school is recognized by the Norwegian Ministry of Education according to the Law on education §2-12, but the school’s current official status does not recognize students’ rights as described in Articles 5 and 6 (right to state subsidized psycho-pedagogical follow-up, and transport to school).

  • Reception / nursery takes place every morning, starting at 7: 45, before the preschool starts.
  • Teaching begins at 8:30 and finishes at 14:45, 14:30 on Fridays. Children are welcomed by the preschool teachers at 8:30 and they’re handed back to their families (or to the person in charge whose identity has been communicated in writing in advance) starting at 14:45, and at 14:30 on Fridays.
  • An after-hours nursery is open every afternoon immediately after the end of classes until 16:45
  • NB: the dates of the school holidays and the opening of the kindergarten (during the holidays) will be published in April.

 

Elementary & Secondary school

The elementary (5 to 11 years old) and secondary (12 to 18 years old) levels are open to any pupil who is willing and able to follow a French language course, provided they pass a language test in elementary school.

The enrolment phase is preceded by a pre-registration. This involves an application fee (NOK 2,500), which must be paid directly when the application is sent.

The allocation committee usually meets in mid-March, based on the pre-registration.

We examine completed applications from March onwards. Please note that incomplete applications will delay the admission process. Letters of admission will be written as soon as possible. Enrolment will be definitive once the deposit (NOK 2,600) and enrolment fee (NOK 2,500) have been paid.

  • secondary levels (from 12 to 18 years old) 
  • If demand at registration exceeds the school’s capacity, your child may be put on a waiting list. Their application case will be treated holistically, on the basis of the school’s pre-established criteria. .

  • Admission to the French School of Oslo depends on acceptance of the school’s rules and regulations and timely payment of school fees.

Re-enrollment

Parents are contacted by the various school secretariats, who will inform them of the re-registration process. These take place on our Eduka platform.

The deadline for re-registration is usually early February.
